Through research in the North Sea it will be determined whether there are areas with increased biodiversity, that are in need of extra protection.
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive, a European directive from 2008, aims to achieve good environmental status in European seas in 2020. One of the priorities is the preservation of biodiversity. The Directive states that spatial measures should be taken to achieve good environmental status.
The aim of this project is to investigate whether there are Dutch North Sea areas with higher biodiversity, which may constitute clues for spatial protection in addition to Natura 2000, from the perspective of the European Marine Strategy Framework.
