Project: Development of a HTP screening platform for targeted selection of GM-free genotypes with novel recognition specification based on the rational design of functional R genes

Changing environmental conditions by global warming increasingly cause major outbreaks of virus and nematode infections in tomato and potato growing areas worldwide.

Partly because of the EU ban on pesticides, European farmers have become fully dependent on the application of resistant crops. However, many of the currently used resistances are broken down by emerging virulent strains or populations, or not even commercially available at the moment. This situation generates a strong demand for tomato and potato genotypes with novel resistances to major pests and diseases. The aim of this project is to use an innovative approach for the targeted selection of genotypes with novel resistance specificities to potex viruses and cyst nematodes based on fundamental knowledge of R protein structure and function in tomato and potato.
