The availability of food in late winter is a way to reverse the decline of farmland birds . The effectiveness of this measure has yet to be tested.
For farmland birds it is hard in the Netherlands. Especially in small-scale agricultural areas on sandy soils their number is rapidly declining. Research in England shows that the absence of food in late winter is a major cause of the decline of farmland birds.
The bird field project aims to:
- Determine the effectiveness of the measures, i.e the effect of winter food supply on breeding density, their survival and their reproduction;
- Determine which measures have effect on farmland birds;
- Test several winter food mixtures to select the best quality for farmland birds during the winter;
- Formulate an economically feasible and agricultural acceptable management frame that effectively promotes bird populations in small Dutch farming areas.
