Replacing fertilizer-N by liquid fraction of manure

Goal of this project is to clarify the effects of replacing fertilizer-N by liquid fraction of manure on farm level at a couple of pilot dairy farms.

Aims

The effects of replacing fertilizer-N by liquid fraction of manure on farm level are clear for a few pilot dairy farms, concerning:

  • environment (nitrate leaching, GHG)
  • farm management (crops, feeding, economics)

This means that the target groups can use this information to make politcs (policy makers) and in their dairy management (dairy farmers).

Important remark: In this pilot the standard for manure should not be a limited factor. The standard for phosphate should be according to the '4th action program concerning the nitrate directive'.

Approach and timeline

At this very moment the dairy sector has to live up a standard for manure and fertilizer. Risk of nitrate leaching is the reason behind these standards. GHG however become more important in the environmental discussion. Decreasing the amount of GHG raises the environmental quality. It is possible that the standards for manure and fertilizer cause extra GHG. Therefore the important question is whether fertiliser can be replaced by liquid fraction of manure to lower the amount of GHG, preventing extra nitrate leaching and generate more income for the dairy farmer. This means that the standard for manure should not be a limit in this pilot project.

Results

The effects of replacing fertilizer-N by liquid fraction of manure on farm level are clear, concerning:

  • environment (nitrate leaching, GHG)
  • farm management (crops, feeding, economics)

Yearly, results will be describes in a report, along with 5 times information on the website(s) and 5 articles in the dairy press.

Further, when requested, presentations and excursions are a way to present results.
