Objectives of the project

Goal is to improve the livestock sector sustainability along the whole production chain.

The overall operational goal for this project is to contribute to the FAO project by providing expertise in the development of SSG's.

The specific goal for the FAO partnership is to develop Sector Specific Guidelines (SSG's) to improve consistency, cost effectiveness and relevance of benchmarking and monitoring environmental performance of livestock production chains.

Results

The results of the FAO project in 2012 are:

  • participation in meetings of the steering committee and informing Mrs Gerda Verburg for her participation in the Steering Committee. Preparation and participation of the partnership meeting in Rome in July. The participation has led to a contribution to the proposed activities.
  • alignment with the feed industry and other stakeholders (amongst them the International Meat Secretariat) about the sector specific Guidelines and the development of the feed database. The World Meat Congress has been attended by the project leader to emphasise the importance of the subject to its members and to discuss with the IMS-secretariat. The alignment with feed industry resulted in the nomination of the projectleader as chair of one of the Technical Advisory groups.
  • preparing the feed database of the Dutch project for wider use in the partnership project. Waiting for the Technical Advisory Groups to start, we already prepared the database of the CFPAN project. This database can act as a starting point for the work in one of the groups. This has been a relatively   labourious part. The work allows to make a head start in 2013.
Due to the delay in finding a project manager by FAO, no concrete output has been realised in 2012. However, the time has been useful spent on preparing databases and the data structure for a head start and for contacts with the feed and meat industry.
