This programme aims to introduce and expand SMART farming techniques in Indonesian agriculture, more specifically fish and dairy production, and to increase the capacity of Indonesian research institutes to study, develop and implement SMART farming applications.
For both the fish and dairy products, as for animal proteins in general, the demand in Indonesia is increasing. However, it has proven to be difficult to expand due to land and environmental constraints. Therefore, it is important to improve the production per animal or per space unit. This is expected to improve efficiency, but also to have a positive impact on farmers’ livelihoods, product quality and sustainability.
By introducing SMART farming technologies data can be acquired in an organised, longitudinal way, and farm management decisions can be supported based upon solid data and good knowledge. Moreover, using good, longitudinal data risk factors and management issues that block efficient production can be identified. By using SMART decision support systems, e.g. apps, daily farm management will be supported, which improves resource use efficiency, economic efficiency, environmental impact, animal health and welfare, and food safety.
To ensure that the knowledge created can be used beyond this programme, the aim is to build and implement systems that will prove to be sustainable after this programme ends.
The programme will be located in the Indonesian provinces West Java (fish and dairy), Jakarta (marine) and East Nusa Tangarra (dairy).
