An integrated approach is developed to optimize decision making about the use of waste streams from smallholder farmers in the Nakuru region in Kenya. The focus is on potential biorefinery for the extraction of protein for human food and animal feed. A systems analysis is performed to ensure that local management decisions (farm-level) result in optimal solutions at larger scale (regional-level).
The first phase includes a model-based scenario evaluation. The goal is to assess what a robust sustainable food system with maximum recycling of residues could look like in the Nakuru region. Subsequently, in the second phase a blue print will be created for a digital twin. The aim of the digital twin is to evaluate the effects of changes in the regional agricultural system and waste streams for farmers and policy.
