The terrestrial vegetation of the BES-islands are mapped and a number of species is studied more closely.
This project focuses on terrestrial vegetation of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba (BES islands). They are not only important for the terrestrial food chain of the islands, but perform also an important role in ecosystem functions such as protection against erosion and conservation of groundwater.
The project has two goals:
- Making quantitative landscape vegetation maps for Saba and St. Eustatius. Such maps are of crucial importance for nature conservation and planning.
- A study on the status and effects of a series of invasive species in the terrestrial ecosystem of all three BES islands, and an analysis of the main problems and the possibilities for controlling
The results are:
- The digital (GIS) landscape ecological vegetation maps for the BES islands are created, implemented and available.
- Four IMARES reports on invasive plants and animals on land and in water have been published.
