During the 2014 Global Oceans Action Summit, LEI welcomed a delegation from Burma (Myanmar) which included the Deputy Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development. LEI, Imares, CBI and Solidaridad had a discussion with the delegation regarding the areas in which cooperation is possible in order to promote the sustainable development of the fishing and aquaculture industries. The organisations also examined the possibilities for stimulating the export of fish and shellfish from Burma to the EU. Common areas which will be investigated further include increasing capacity, marine stock assessments, technical and financial support for the development of aquaculture, the Seafood Trade intelligence Portal and CBI's export coaching programme. After a fruitful discussion about LEI, the organisations visited one of the pelagic trawlers belonging to the Jackzon fishing company in Scheveningen. During the visit, LEI and Solidaridad announced that a Dutch aquaculture and fishery trade mission will be travelling to Burma in October 2014. This news was positively received by the delegation.
