Alumna Lineke Brouwer – MSc Earth and Environment

Lineke started the bachelor Soil, Water, Atmosphere because she was interested in natural processes of the earth. After reading in National Geographic about issues about water management, it became clear that she wanted to contribute to this. The choice for the master Earth and Environment, specialisation Hydrology and Water Resources was quickly made.

I’m proud to be a link in the daily process to ensure good water management and keeping the Netherlands safe from flooding!

Planet Earth: How, why, what?

Since high school I have been interested in the natural processes of Earth. I asked myself questions like “What kind of relationships can be found between these natural processes? How do they work and why do they work the way they do?” After reading a brochure about the Bachelor programme Soil, Water and Atmosphere and attending an University workshop I knew that I wanted to attend this multidisciplinary Bachelor programme at Wageningen University.

My studies

During my Bachelor studies I became more and more interested in hydrology, especially after reading an edition of the National Geographic about water management in the 21st century. It addressed different national and international issues about water management, water quality and drinking water. An eye-opener for me! It became clear to me that I want to contribute to a more sustainable water management, supported by substantial knowledge about hydrology and water quality. The choice for the master Earth and Environment, specialisation Hydrology and Water Resources was thus quickly made.

For my Master thesis I’ve designed a sedimentation model for water board The Dommel. As my internship I did a study on the consequences of land subsidence for water management on behalf of Water board Reest and Wieden. To improve my organizational and social competencies I attended the board of the Annual Introduction Days for one year. A valuable and unforgettable experience!

My current job

I am currently working at Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland (a water board located in the province of Zuid-Holland) as policy advisor. In my job I combine my analytical and interdisciplinary knowledge about hydrology and water quality with my organizational and social skills. It’s this combination that I like very much.

As policy advisor I deal with different, often political, interests. Together with stakeholders I discuss their interests and explore possible solutions to the problem at hand. Together we try to find the most sustainable solution. This is always a challenging but interesting process!

My daily work consists of many meetings with stakeholders, policy writing and analysing literature and (GIS)data. One of the projects I’m currently working on is making ‘peilbesluiten’. A peilbesluit is a plan for maintaining the water at a fixed level, adjusted to the land use in a ‘polder’. This involves weighing different interests in relation to the current and the optimal water level in an area.

Other projects where I’m working on is writing new policy on peilbesluiten and water level management, on groundwater management and on flood prevention. In all these projects it’s my interdisciplinary knowledge and the critical scientific attitude I gained during my studies in Wageningen that adds value to my work. I’m proud to be a link in the daily process to ensure good water management and keeping the Netherlands safe from flooding!
