Adhesives or coatings are used in many wood applications and wood fibre products to improve product quality. Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research develops biobased alternatives for these petroleum-based agents.
The replacement of petroleum-based adhesives and coatings for wood products allows us to take an important step in improving the durability of wood-based products.
Wood adhesive based on lignin
Food & Biobased Research examines biobased possibilities to make wood products more durable. Lignin is an example of an interesting biomass component which has been successfully used in environmentally friendly wood adhesives. In addition, we have developed alternative uses for fibre composites, such as in production methods for strong coconut fibre boards without the addition of chemical binders. We develop wood modification possibilities in collaboration with industrial partners and other research institutes, focusing especially on lignocellulosic (woody) residues from biorefinery processes. Moreover, we investigate the processes and potential applications of alternative biobased products for wood processing and adhesion.
Construction and composite materials
Another important research area is the use of wood and natural fibre composites in which lignin-based or other biopolymers and mineral-based binders are used. These biobased wood and natural fibre composites allow interesting innovations in construction and composite materials to be realised, such as phenol-formaldehyde-replacing adhesives or lightweight flax and hemp fibre cement materials.
Food & Biobased Research has patented the technology to apply pyrolysis oil in making wood more durable. This method allows it to be used more widely in outdoor applications, such as fences and campsheds.
