For international students and professionals in the agro-sector we offer distance learning modules on Plant Pathology and Plant Breeding.

Plant Pathology:

The following modules are present:
• Phytopathology, including:
o Fungi and fungal-like organisms
o Bacteria
• Nematology
• Entomology
• Gene-for-gene hypothesis

The following modules are in preparation:
• Virology

Plant Breeding:

The following modules are present:
• Marker-assisted selection, including:
o Markers
o Linkage mapping
o QTL-analysis
o MAS in breeding
• Novel sequencing techniques, including:
o Sanger
o Second-generation sequencing
o Third-generation (single-molecule sequencing)
• Resistance to biotic factors, including:
o Gene-for-gene resistance
o Partial resistance

Distance education is more efficient than many traditional forms of learning, because of the active role of the student. Specific advantages of these modules above other types of education are: 1. The possibility to compose any combination of modules, enabling to specialise of fill gaps in knowledge; 2. Study at times that are suitable to you; 3. Choose your own study speed; and 4. Avoid traveling time. The modules have been successfully used and understood by a broad audience from more than twenty different countries, who rated the modules as "good" (4 on a 0-5 scale). Supervision is by e-mail. In order to receive a certificate, it is necessary to do a written classroom exam.

The modules have been developed with the help of funds from Wageningen University, the EU-project BioExploit, the Royal Netherlands Society of Plant Pathology (KNPV), and the Foundation Willie Commelin Scholten for Phytopathology (WCS).
