Stichting Woord en Daad is a Dutch development organisation I worked for as a volunteer during my Bachelor International Development Studies. Later, I did my internship there during the Master Applied Communication Science, and after that I replaced a colleague who was on leave. Eventually, they offered me a full-time position before I had even finished my thesis.
In my current job I have two positions: Political Advisor and Policy Influencing Advisor. As political advisor, I closely follow the Dutch and European development policy and, if necessary, I try to influence policy through contact with politicians, civil servants and various organisations. As policy influencing advisor, I provide partner organisations in Eastern and Southern Africa, and in Latin America with strategic support in setting up and implementing successful lobby and advocacy programmes.
I am convinced that my master helped me understand what processes of change do to people’s perceptions and it has taught me how to create spaces for change. The study allowed me to delve into different theoretical aspects of communication and there is always a link with real life situations of innovation, conflict, persuasion and change. The master was very interesting and has proven to be relevant in the professional field.
