Long live the cow

Healthy old cows that keep producing a lot of milk, that's what will help dairy farmers. A cow's health often deteriorates after three to four years. Together with partners from commercial sectors, researchers at Wageningen UR are working on methods to extend a cow's maximum production period.

With sensors such as step counters and feed meters and with smart software, dairy farmers can keep track of the individual health of each cow, and can take immediate action if necessary. With these tools, researchers hope to extend the lives of cows up to two years. This is how Wageningen UR contributes to improving the quality of life.

Smart software and sensors that can keep track of individual animals and give cows and calves the attention they require: it improves animal welfare and allows dairy farmers to make efficient use of their time. An additional advantage to this data gathering system is that it can also be used to offer more transparency to customers and consumers.
