In April 2012 Machiel Lamers from the Environmental Policy Group, part of Wageningen University and Research centre, travelled to Nain, Nunatsiavut, Canada. He delivered a keynote presentation at the 3rd IPTRN Conference, organised by the International Polar Tourism Research Network of which Lamers is the current chairman.

At the conference, polar tourism researchers from across the world exchanged their latest academic insights. A special day was devoted for conference delegates and the local Inuit communities to exchange ideas on how to develop tourism in this remote part of the world in a sustainable manner. During his presentation Lamers showed the diverse ways in which cruise tourism mobility in the Antarctic and European Arctic regions are regulated by a plethora of actors at multiple levels.
