Networking, Social Capital and Gender Roles in the Cotton System in Benin

The thesis deals with the dynamic interaction between cotton farmers' power (to and over) to make choices and their cotton organisations and other institutions in northern Benin and how this affects their livelihood system.

The results show the importance of social relations and group cohesion for acting collectively. These results further depicts the important role of women in cotton production as well as in livelihood adaptation strategies after the decline of cotton, despite their underrepresentation in cotton organisations.
