Summary

Faster techniques were introduced in this thesis to analyse chemicals in plants. A new mass spectrometric technique was used to distinguish toxic Japanese start anise from visually identical non-toxic Chinese star anise within seconds without destroying the samples. Five by two cm glass chips with different channels inside were used for automatic sample preparation of crude plant extracts in small amounts (microliters). In addition, greener techniques, like simplified purification of chemicals from plants, using less toxic organic solvents and minimising the energy needed, were also developed.
