On Thursday the 7th of November 2013, more than 200 people gathered at the new Veiling in Holambra, Brazil, to attend the seminar 'Innovations in Horticulture, moving towards a better result', organised by Wageningen UR, Incotec and the Veiling of Holambra. The seminar and the subsequent alumni meeting proved to be an excellent occasion to discuss opportunities for collaboration between Brazilian and Dutch experts in the horticultural sector.
Seminar 'Innovations in Horticulture'The seminar was opened by Mr. Andre van Kruijssen, the director of the Veiling, who used the occasion to announce the opening of a new cash and carry centre in April 2014. Other speakers included Dr. Aalt Dijkhuizen, Dr. Ernst van den Ende, Dr. Warley Marcos Nascimento, Ms. Barbara Puchala, Alfredo Weel, Joao Leandro Rodrigues and Dr Peter Zuurbier, who each discussed experiences and challenges in chain improvement.
Alumni meeting 'Waste in Horticulture'
The Jubilee programme for alumni in 2013 includes a number of debates that are organised in countries which are important for Wageningen UR and where several of our alumni live and work. The seminar was therefore combined with an alumni meeting that centred around the theme "Waste in Horticulture", under the leadership of its president Paco van der Louw.Getting the process of innovation in motion, Dr. Peter Zuurbier , director Latin America and the Caribbean of Wageningen UR, was very pleased with the outcome of the two events, "The overall impression of both meetings was that the demand for innovation in horticulture in Brazil is enormous" (s)he commented, "The next step will be to get the process of innovation with all parties involved in motion!"
