More than 1 billion people eat potatoes on a regular basis. In 2020 we will need 370 million tons of potatoes. But Phytophthora infestans (or potato blight) is threatening (and even destroying) countless crops. Pesticides are not a sustainable solution.
Francine Govers is using the acquired funding to study how Phytophthora takes control of the potato cells once the plant has become infected. This could lead to new methods that give potato blight no chance.
Francine Govers: ‘Our aim is to develop a new, robust mechanism that protects the potato plant from Phytophthora. Until now, resistance was always broken within a year, but we think that this new approach may hold the key to a solution. This would have massive implications for the global food supply.'
