Plant diseases caused by Phytophthora pathogens can lead to severe yield losses in agriculture and can be devastating in natural ecosystems. Well-known examples are potato late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans and Sudden Oak Death caused by Phytophthora ramorum. Phytophthora pathogens are notoriously difficult to control and this is mainly due to their ability to rapidly adapt and to overcome resistance introduced by the breeding. This thesis focuses on a novel type of plant immune receptors classified as legume-like lectin receptor kinases (LecRKs) that could be exploited to control Phytophthora pathogens. LecRKs in different plant species were analyzed and several were found to play a role in immunity, not only against Phytophthora pathogens but also against fungal and bacterial pathogens. Therefore, LecRKs can provide an additional layer of defence. Pyramiding LecRKs with other resistance components is expected to give a quantitative synergistic effect that could provide broad-spectrum disease resistance.
