Using Genetic Transformation to Produce Enhanced Levels of Erucic Acid and Novel Wax Esters in Crambe abyssinica

The oil stored in plant seeds is not only a very crucial resource for seedling growth, but also an essential renewable resource for humans. Oil seed crop Crambe abyssinica is a new crop for industry. To elevate the value of its culture, genetic modification was engaged.

In the present research, a new transformation protocol of C. abyssinica was developed. And with this new protocol, the transformation was performed. By introducing new genes into C. abyssinica genome, the erucic content of its seed of was increase from 60% to 79%; novel wax ester was produced by the seed of transgene C. abyssinica; the marker-free system developed by Plant Breeding, WUR, were applied C. abyssinica on genetic modification successfully.
