Traditionally, an atmospheric correction is applied to the measurements to obtain top-of-canopy data, from which the vegetation variables are then estimated using either empirical or physically-based methods. Physically-based methods are more general because they rely on canopy models. The atmospheric correction step, however, introduces errors in the top-of canopy data and therefore limits the estimation accuracy. This thesis proposes to couple the canopy model with the atmosphere model used in the atmospheric correction, thereby allowing estimating the vegetation variables more accurately, directly from the measured data.
