Vidi grant for Stan Brouns

Dr. Stan Brouns will receive a Vidi grant from the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). He will receive up to 800,000 euros for his research. Brouns investigates how bacteria defend themselves against viruses.
Unravelling an immune system in Bacteria
Bacteria are under constant threat of virus attacks. In order to survive bacteria have developed an immune system with a memory, which enables them to withstand virus infections. My research focuses on how this memory is initially formed, and how it is then used to stop virus infection in its tracks. The acquired knowledge can be used to protect industrially relevant bacteria in large scale production processes from detrimental virus raids.
