Alumniverhaal

Alumna Anne Koning

Anne studied Forestry at Wageningen University. She graduated in 1994.

I am committed to promoting social, green and child-friendly neighbourhoods. Because places where children play are also pleasant places for others.
At 18 years, Anne Koning became fascinated with environmental problems such as acid rain, which were regularly featured on the news back then. This, combined with a broad interest in nature, was why she decided to study Forestry at Wageningen University. She graduated in 1994, after a busy period as a student, during which she was a member of the Wageningen city council for the Labour Party. Anne never strayed far from both her political and green background: she is now a member of the Dutch senate as a spokesperson for Economics, Environment and Child Care. The combination with child care seems odd, but Anne explains:

“I am committed to promoting social, green and child-friendly neighbourhoods. Because places where children play are also pleasant places for others.”

Anne worked for Jantje Beton, where she was the head of the Programmes department. She has got her own agency: “Stad 2.0”. She was also council member and alderman at the municipality of Delft, and she was a member of the Provincial Council.
Anne is still glad she decided to study in Wageningen. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of her degree, she can apply her skills in many different areas. And to the question if she has got hobbies in addition to her work, she answers:
“The outdoors are my passion.”
