Alumniverhaal

Alumnus Silvester de Nooijer

In 2006, Silvester de Nooijer obtained his Master in Molecular Sciences with a specialisation in Biological Chemistry.

The great thing about my work is that you are developing new species.
He continued his career with a PhD in Molecular Biology at the WUR. After he finished his PhD in 2010, he started his corporate career as a Genomic Breeder at the breeding company Rijk Zwaan. Nowadays, Silvester is a breeding manager at this company, and leads a team of breeders who occupy themselves with developing new pepper and eggplant species. These new species have, for example, got a higher yield, nutritional value, resistance to disease or a better taste than their predecessors.

For Silvester, good knowledge and skills regarding the breeding of plants is essential to doing his work well. It is never boring, and there is always a lot to discover. “The great thing about my work is that you are developing new species.” Who knows, the eggplant or pepper on your plate might be bred by Silvester!
