I wanted to extend my GIS-knowledge in an internship
Ellen van den Berg

Esri Nederland is the Dutch distributor of Esri software. Having worked with ArcGIS in my GIS minor I wanted to extend my knowledge in an internship. I did my internship in the content-team which is part of the product consultancy department. In the beginning I was able to follow training courses on ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online. After this I joined the team on various subjects. I worked on a zip code areas model in ModelBuilder. I also worked on making several web maps and apps that were published online during my internship period already. It was exciting to see your work being put to use.

In my interview I indicated that I wanted to work on an environmental topic. My internship report was about the ‘Laan van de Leefomgeving’, the digital infrastructure for the new Environmental law that enters into force in 2018. I made a datamatrix with possible data that Esri could offer as content in de ‘Laan van de Leefomgeving’. I also joined several meetings about this topic. It was interesting to experience how a company is preparing for new developments.

All in all my internship at Esri was very divers and with theoretical and practical parts and with environment and non-environment related topics. During my internship period I strongly improved my GIS skills. I can recommend everyone who wants to increase her/his GIS skills to do their internship at Esri. Everything was arranged very well.
