Student Nick - MSc International Development Studies
"I did my bachelor in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology." Nick got more interested in the field of development studies during his bachelor.
I also get to choose quite a lot of optional courses here, because my bachelor study fits very well with this programme.
Optional courses
“I got more interested in the field of development studies, especially in the theme of social inequality, conflict and social movements. The master International Development studies offers a lot of opportunities to focus on themes that interest me. I like the fact this master is two years and that I could choose a specialisation (I choose Sociology of Development). I also get to choose quite a lot of optional courses here since my bachelor study fits very well with this programme. You can do an internship in this programme to acquire some practical experience. You start with the thesis only in your second year, so you have had time to think about what interests you really.
Own interests
The classes here are small, the teachers are very dedicated and the supervision is excellent. The themes in the programme appealed to me and I had the freedom to follow my own interests. I did my internship at a local NGO which targeted marginalised Roma people in Bulgaria. For my thesis, I am doing research in Honduras with the help of a local NGO and my first year of courses has prepared me well to undertake this research. I am researching the impact of mining and the opposition to industry, a controversial topic. I get to think about a whole lot of different dimensions: social movements, human rights, health, crime, and political repression.”
