Joep Langeveld did his internship at Royal HaskoningDHV, the Netherlands in 2015.
Royal HaskoningDHV is a project management and engineering consultancy active in the fields of aviation, buildings, energy, industry, infrastructure, maritime, mining, transport, urban and rural planning and water. The company (slogan: Enhancing society together) consults for public and private clients in more than 130 countries and has its main offices in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and South Africa. I did my internship project at the Royal HaskoningDHV’s global head office in Amersfoort.
My internship project consisted of conducting the third edition of a research on trends in the physical environment at Dutch municipalities: the Municipal Barometer of the Physical Environment 2015. For me, this involved coordinating the project, setting up a survey, communicating with sub-topic experts, taking care of data collection and analysis, and reviewing the texts written by the experts on the different subjects. Most of the time I spent at the office, though I also interviewed about fifteen aldermen in Dutch municipalities. This gave me a very nice insight in the different attitudes towards municipal policy. The interdisciplinary character of my study in Environmental Sciences enabled me to connect policy, economics, politics and sciences in my internship. Moreover, I was familiar with most of the sub-topics in the physical environment. It was an experience of added value to combine both interdisciplinary character and knowledge and apply them in this consultancy project. In the end, the research project was a clear success: The research report appeared on national media, therefore the project managed to achieve a large equivalent advertisement value.
The working facilities and atmosphere at Royal HaskoningDHV are nice. Communication is professional though still quite informal: people are friendly and eager to show you around or to give you advice. The atmosphere therefore is pleasant. If you would like to experience working in a consultancy, I would definitely recommend Royal HaskoningDHV. You can check their website http://www.royalhaskoningdhv.com/nl-nl/nederland/werken-bij/stage-en-afstuderen/stageplekken, but I would also suggest to approach them yourself and express your interest for an internship.
