Testimonial Luc Doggen

I am Luc Doggen (22 years old) and studying Master Plant Sciences with the specialisation Plant Pathology and Entomology at the University of Wageningen. I did my Master thesis at the department of Nematology from September 2014 till March 2015.

... and gained a lot of knowledge together with a lot of new experiences for future.

My topic was: Monitoring free living nematodes in arable and natural fields. I sampled soil samples four times from September 2014 till February 2015. For me this was a really nice topic, because now I can combine practical work with lab work. I sampled the nematodes in arable and natural fields, extracted the nematodes and purified DNA to determine which nematode taxa were present. Specific primer sets were used to reveal the different nematode taxa. This was a really cool experience to work with new DNA tools and try to draw conclusions on the basis of these nematode taxa abundances. My topic was part of a much bigger study about using nematode taxa as an indicator of soil health. As a main goal it was important to see how different nematode taxa fluctuate in time under non-toxic conditions in arable and natural fields and how this can be explained. I really enjoyed my stay at the department of Nematology and gained a lot of knowledge together with a lot of new experiences for future.
