For my study Biotechnology I did my bachelor thesis at the Laboratory of Nematology. I worked in the C. elegans group during this period of 3,5 months.
Before I came to the Nematology lab I didn’t even know what nematodes are. But now I know that C. elegans is a beautiful model organism for human aging and disease. It is unbelievable how useful such a small organism can be for research. The months I spent at the chair group were a combination of literature research, lab work, a little bit of bioinformatics, writing and a lot of crying and laughing. During my thesis the most instructive part was the failures. By making mistakes and trial and error I learned how life goes in the lab and how to deal with my own frustration. But besides that, the better part is the good atmosphere. I really enjoyed all nice colleagues. It was nice to work with them and making fun with them during coffee breaks. They are the reason I will go back tomorrow to collect my prize of the Soccer pool last summer (something that I didn’t fail).
I can really recommend Nematology as a good chair group for students to do their thesis. Supervisors will teach you a lot and help you with your problems during your research. And all other people are real good motivators to work hard for good results.
