Hi there, I am Marieke de Cock and I did my bachelor thesis at the Nematology Department of WU. My thesis was about Venom allergen-like proteins (VAPs) from Brugia malayi (BmVAL-1) and Meloidogyne incognita (MiVAP-1).
For my thesis I did a lot of experimental work (about 2,5 months) including cloning, ATTA, protein purification, dendritic cell assays and flow-cytometry. Most of the techniques were new for me or faded out of my memory. Though with the willingness of the laboratory staff and my supervisor to help me, I succeeded and was able to do it myself! During this thesis I really learned a lot, not only about the different techniques, but also about how to write a scientific report, how to review reports of others (which also helps to improve your own report) and participating in work discussions with your section. Besides that, I really enjoyed my stay at Nematology. The atmosphere is really great, everybody is willing to help each other, we have coffee and lunch breaks together (with often lots of cake!) and also doing fun activities together after 'working time' like lasergaming!
