My name is Marretje Adriaanse and for the graduation project of my Bachelor Biology (at the Utrecht University) I decided to come to the Laboratory of Nematology.
I have thought a while about a sentence that could summarize my experiences at nematology but I suppose there are just too many positive things to say. I wrote my thesis on the correlations between the primary decomposers and nematodes of the soil ecosystem. I got insight into the complete process of research (from sampling to lab work to writing). During all the steps of my thesis, great guidance was offered, which made it an extremely valuable experience. I felt that the atmosphere at nematology is very open concerning questions, ideas, input and discussions. The atmosphere was actually also very enjoyable. This could be experienced during the pleasant coffee breaks but also in the awesome Sinterklaas and Christmas celebrations.
The weekly thesis rings, in which students give each other feedback, were also very nice. It was a good occasion to meet other students, get insight into the diversity of thesis subjects at Nematology and the meetings were very educative. Another thing I really liked were the weekly work meetings within our research group that were led by Hans Helder. In those meetings, everybody would share what they were doing and what thoughts or tasks kept them busy. This gave a good insight into what it is like to have a career of a researcher at the university.
