For the past six months I have had the opportunity of doing my MSc thesis at the laboratory of Nematology at WUR. Over the course of this semester, I had the chance to study the effects of EtOH exposure in the invertebrate animal model C. elegans with the help and guidance of my supervisor, Marijke van Wijk. With a background in forensic biology and parasitology, doing my thesis at the nematology lab seemed like a good fit, and it gave me the chance to learn new skills such as bioinformatic analysis and performing behavioural assays.

My time at the Nematology lab has been informative, instructional as well as a bit challenging given the global COVID pandemic. A lot of accommodations and restrictions had to be observed, which have impacted everyone in many different ways. Nonetheless, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the lab, being one of the lucky ones to actually get to do experimental work on the lab during these challenging times. It was great fun getting to meet new people both on the lab and outside of it, despite having to keep our (1.5 m) distance. Online social activities were organised in such a way people could still get to know each other, and I particularly enjoyed the end-of-year holiday activities, which were very fun to participate in.

One of the most important things I have learned from this whole experience was acquiring the adaptability and flexibility while working both from home and on the lab in order to accommodate for an ever-changing situation in and around the workplace. Working on an interesting topic and getting to acquire new skills in the area of bioinformatics was also very satisfying, and really gave me a sense of accomplishment as I was working on the project.
