Week 5 Carlijn

Time flies when you’re having fun, right? Last week I studied the materials of week 5, about lipids and health. I can’t believe time is going so fast, before I know it this MOOC will be over again.

After this week, I noticed that I’m thinking when I’m eating and it often happens that I begin to talk about this MOOC during diner.

The week began with information about some diseases: I learned the basics of coronary heart disease, strokes and atherosclerosis. Actually this was very handy, because in my bachelor’s programme I’m following the course General Medicine and I could use this information with my groupwork for that course. After that, I read some information and watched some videos about the risk factors of cardiovascular disease, the effect of cholesterol on our health and about trans fatty acids.

This week there was some interesting content in the MOOC, namely two interviews. Firstly, we could see an interview of Sander Kersten with Dr. Martijn Katan, one of the world's foremost nutrition scientists and former faculty member of the Division of Human Nutrition at Wageningen University and VU University Amsterdam. His own scientific work relates to the effects of dietary lipids on cholesterol and during the interview he taught us a lot about doing research and about the development of trans fatty acids in nutrition. The second interview was with Dr. Daan Kromhout: a Professor in the Division of Human Nutrition at Wageningen University and principal investigator of the Zutphen Study, a cohort study that started as a subsample within the Seven Countries Study. He taught us a lot about the relation of eating fish and coronary heart disease.

I finished the fifth week with making the Section Exam and passed with 83%! This week didn’t really have an influence on what I ate, but it did make me more conscious about the effects of nutrition. Normally I don’t really think when I’m eating, most of the times I’m just talking with the persons sitting next to me or I’m just so hungry that I don’t want to think. But after this week, I noticed that I’m thinking when I’m eating and it often happens that I begin to talk about this MOOC during diner. My mom is really interested in the things I learn, so especially during the weekend I discuss the things I’ve learned. I still like to eat pizza but I noticed that I am now making it with more vegetables than before and also during grocery shopping I am starting to buy more and more fruit. I’m looking forward to the next week!
