Wageningen Marine Research studies the problems related to plastic debris in the marine environment. Seabirds and other marine wildlife may ingest plastic debris or become entangled in it, like this gannet has.
Due to a global increase in the demand for food, fish and shellfish farming have been heavily on the rise and sustainable fishing is needed to secure the world’s food supply. Wageningen Marine Research has the necessary knowledge and investigates the potential for the aquaculture and fisheries sectors to develop sustainable and profitable businesses.
Since the 1960s, Wageningen Marine Research has been counting common seals on the sand banks in the Dutch Wadden Sea, a task assigned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. With a small airplane, the entire Wadden area is surveyed, from Den Helder to the Dollard.
Wageningen University & Research hosts a Support Desk on mussels, where mussel growers may deposit questions from practice. The Support Desk is meant for questions that can be answered based on available knowledge and/ or short supplemental research.
