Robotic handling from tomato to chicken breasts

Flexible handling solutions are developed to handle a variety of food products form tomato to chicken breasts. Starting point is the harvest crate as input. Based on 3D camera’s in the working range of the robot, food products are picked one by one by the robot and placed in the package. Another robot runs on cables to move in X and Y direction. This robot has a flexible rectangular working range so that these robotic systems can easily feed multiple conveyers with a small footprint of the robot.

Thermoformer

PicknPack developed a flexible packaging module. A brick system is used to modify shapes in a mould and with a fast exchange mechanism it is possible to exchange the mould within 20 seconds without changing foils. With this mould it is possible to produce packages to customer demands at low costs.

Flexible printer

An essential part of flexible is the ability to change the decoration of the package to adjust is to the right retail channel or other target market or brand. Food packaging facilities have many decorated foils at stock. Large quantities of packaging material become every year obsolete. Printing the decoration at the last moment also provides the opportunity to add real-time quality features on the package.

Cleaning robot

Picknpack developed a robot tha can clean the line from the inside. Cleaning is limited to clean only the food contact parts and with a camera controlled software program it can select, clean and check critical places to achieve a better cleaning result. This way of cleaning is much dryer with less contamination risks to the environment.

Quality Assessement System (QAS)

Every product has it’s specific quality features. To adapt quality features smart to one to another product PicknPack developed QAS. QAS is equipped with different sensors, such as: 3D colour cameras, hyperspectral cameras, 3D x-ray cameras and microwave scanning antennas. With this setup it is possible to measure internal and external quality features. The sensors are fused by using methods of machine learning to extract only the relevant combination of quality features for the product.
