In the renovation project of the Amsterdam Quay Walls

Abstract: This thesis report discusses the positive effect of nature on the relieve of stress, and more specifically on how this effect can optimally be applied in the renovation of the quay walls of Amsterdam. These quay walls are in need of renovation and the municipality of Amsterdam wants to find innovate solutions for this problem, giving the opportunity to implement this stress-relieving effect.
This research covers two theories on this stress-relieving effect, the Stress Recovery Theory (Ulrich, 1983) and the Attention Restoration Theory (Kaplan, 1995). Out of these theories, design criteria are developed. To implement green space on the quay walls of Amsterdam, design principles are created. A detailed design location is chosen, in which these design principles and the overall design are assessed based on the design criteria formed in the theoretical framework.
The final assessed design principles provide as tools for further implementation in the city centre of Amsterdam. More importantly, this research shows that the overall method by which these principles are placed in relation to each other has a very large effect on the degree to which the stress-relieving effect of nature can be achieved.

Towards thermally comfortable and restorative hospital outdoor spaces at hospital Gelderse Vallei Ede.

Abstract: Noli turbare circulos meos! Do not disturb my circles! – Archimedes For a healthy population, a healthy hospital staff is a prerequisite. However, their long and intensive working days can cause or contribute to attentional fatigue, which interferes with their work performance. Any opportunity to revitalise during a shift should be taken on with both hands, meaning staff needs the opportunity to blow off some steam occasionally. This thesis explores how hospital outdoor spaces can contribute to attention restoration of staff, within a framework of thermal comfort. Hospital Gelderse Vallei Ede provides the context for this research. Design principles based on Attention Restoration Theory and heat stress are identified, and a site-analysis is executed to give direction to design guidelines. Zones were identified to better decompose the underlying causes of the problems at the site. The design guidelines are used to draft design concept variations, which in turn are evaluated by criteria for thermal comfort. One zone is redesigned in detail, and evaluated by criteria for attention restoration. Both the design guidelines and criteria are based on literature, which results in evidence-based designs, meaning that the redesigns of Hospital Gelderse Vallei are credible for their restorative and heat-mitigative potential.

Agricultural Park in the Binnenveld
Identifying the possible implementation of a multi-functional agricultural park in the Binnenveld.

Abstract: In the Netherlands the agricultural sector is for a big part export-oriented. Not only does this export-oriented mass production result in high greenhouse gas emissions, it also contributes to negative externalities affecting the functioning of local landscape. Furthermore, urban expansion is major threat to the permanence of farmland.
The Binnenveld is an agricultural area surrounded by the cities of Wageningen, Ede and Veenendaal. A design for a new agricultural park of the Binnenveld, to facilitate a necessary transition of the agricultural sector, is needed. Due to a newly developed agricultural park, new local networks and markets can emerge, resulting in more local-oriented food production. The connection between the urban and rural domain can strengthen, which increases the value of farmland and the amount of revenue streams a farm has. This makes farmland more dynamic and viable. This coexistence of the rural and urban domain will be enforced by amplifying ecosystem services.

Designing a constructed wetland park on Pope Square Brazil

Introduction: Praça do Papa, henceforth referred to as PopePope Square, lies in the neighborhood of Enseada do Sua in the city of Vitória, Brazil next to the Bay of Vitória, providing spectacular views over the bay and the city of Vila Velha. The history of the city of Vitória began in the 16th century. with the settlement of the island of Vitória. When the city began growing in the 19th century, plans were drawn up to use landfi lls to grow the city out into the bay. (Francisco and Freitas, 2010).
Enseada do Sua is one of those landfi ll projects. Completed in 1993 (Francisco and Freitas, 2010), it became one of the fi nancial centers of the city (Victory in Data - Enseada do Suá, n.d.). The landfi ll is fl at, highlighting the stark contrast between the artifi cial and the granite islands that are now connected to each other by landfi ll. Some of these hills house the favelas of the area. They can easily be identifi ed on Google maps by their density, shape and organic appearance. Two of such favelas are Jesus de Nazareth and Paria do Suá.
Introduction: In de gemeente Westerveld is 28,7% van de bevolking 65-plus; dit is in Nederland gemiddeld 19,5% (, 2021). Dit laat zien dat de gemeente relatief veel met vergrijzing te maken heeft en er dus ook een groter aandeel minder gezonde/fitte mensen wonen. Een dorpshuis zoals de Veldkei kan een belangrijke rol spelen in het verhogen van de vitaliteit van zijn gebruikers en andere dorpsbewoners door hier en in de omgeving fysieke activiteiten, interactie en bezinning te bevorderen.

Creating Placeness in an urban square
Giving the Pope’s square in Vitoria, Brazil a new lively identity

Abstract: The Pope’s Square struggles with its placeness, it is very much a non-place. The square is in need for a lively identity. The goal of this thesis is to use guidelines and the process of placemaking to create an authentic place with its own lively identity. This can be done by following guidelines on creating lively urban parks, creating places where people want to be; and by using different placemaking strategies, such as creative placemaking. We take a look at why the square is lacking placeness, why it can be considered a non-place, what is a sense of place, what is placeness, when is a place lively? All these questions and topics need to be answered to create placeness and a sense of identity.
Using placemaking is a strategy to create placeness by getting people involved and using them to create placeness.
Creating liveliness by looking at guidelines on creating places for people .
The different guidelines can be combined and made into a toolbox. This toolbox can be used to create a design for the square, that will create placeness and give the square a lively identity.

The experiential quality of circular agrarian landscapes
How implementing circular agriculture based on the archetypes of SPLENDID on a testing ground in the agrarian area of Etten-Leur can contribute to the experiential quality of the landscape.

Abstract: The increasing intensification of agriculture in the past decades poses many problems such as environmental pollution and increasing conflict between farmers and the government. Circular agriculture, as divided in three archetypes by research project SPLENDID, could pose a solution to these problems. In this thesis I investigate how to design archetypes of circular agriculture that can contribute to the experiential quality, of agrarian landscapes. The design area for this thesis is the agrarian area north of the Dutch town Etten-Leur. Based on research into the archetypes, circular agriculture and landscape quality, a regional model with the three archetypes will be created. This regional model will be used as a basis for the design of a testing ground of the archetypes of circular agriculture in a detail area. This testing ground could be used to interest and persuade surrounding farmers and interested citizens that a circular agrarian landscape can be a great solution to the current problems in agriculture. The outcomes of this research could be used in the future as an example of how circular agriculture can be effectively implemented in the landscape and improve the experiential quality of the landscape.

The Netherlands, the sustainable producer for the world

Abstract: Studies have determined that our current linear food production system is failing to support the growing world population as well as it’s detrimental for the physical environment and even leads to strained profitability for farmers in some cases. To prevent losses in environment as well as in resources a circular production system is proposed and will be tested for the agriculture sector. However, in designing for circular agriculture the spatial quality of the landscape shouldn’t be forgotten as this is increasingly valued in western societies. This research investigates six design guidelines for three archetypes of circular agriculture based on spatial landscape conditions and criteria for spatial quality. Through a regional and detailed design as well as an assessment matrix all 6 guidelines have been proven significant and valuable for the area. The design guidelines have been devided over the different archetypes, nature based (3), technology land based (2) and technology non-land based (1).

How design can extend temporary nature on Amsterdam
quay walls while benefitting Amsterdam citizens wellbeing

Abstract: Because of the unstable and deteriorating state of the Amsterdam quay walls, temporary safety measures are being taken. Within these temporary safety measures the municipality of Amsterdam is developing temporary nature. This development can benefit Amsterdam citizens’ wellbeing. Yet, there is no clear plan on what will happen to the temporary nature when the temporary safety measures will disappear. This BSc thesis is a research on how the temporary nature can be extended on the Amsterdam quay walls while benefitting Amsterdam citizens’ wellbeing.

De Veldkei, community center for the future of Havelte
Learning from the community spaces of Haveltes past and applying the knowledge to the future outdoor space of de Veldkei.

Abstract: Community centre De Veldkei is in need of a new outdoor space. The current outdoor space is outdated, grey and badly connected to its direct surroundings. In this thesis an in depth look is taken at the historical community spaces of Havelte. Five community spaces are selected and subjected to a social and spatial analysis. This results in a list of four historical spatial qualities: semi outdoor spaces, high trees, open areas and suspense. Next to this a participative process with the community of Havelte was undertaken. This resulted in a list of spatial questions for the future outdoor space of De Veldkei. In a research through design process two proposal designs are tested on the spatial questions from the community as well as the historical spatial qualities. The final design presented in this thesis shows how the historical spatial qualities can be applied in order to solve the issues with the current outdoor space as well as answer the spatial questions from the community.

Landscape Based Design for Spatial Quality and Circular Agriculture near Etten-Leur

Abstract: In the past decades, ambitions to feed the world have shaped Dutch rural landscapes. The current mono-functional production system, however, is reaching its limits. Farmers struggle economically to keep up with increasing intensification. At the same time, they need to adapt to a changing society and regulations, trying to minimize environmental deterioration caused by this production oriented system. The government therefore believes a transition to circular agriculture is needed to solve these issues. While circularity could be reached within the current economic paradigm, this thesis presents the possibilities for a landscape based, nature inclusive approach to circularity that includes all forms of spatial quality. Opting for a long term, eco-effective solution, that works with the principles of nature and the underlying landscape.
Abstract: Earth is coping with climate change, having many negative impacts in the landscape. Especially the water problems are worsening in the landscape. In this thesis, an investigation of the area of the Binnenveld is made in order to propose a design for a climate-robust landscape. This means that the design is anticipating on the negative effects of climate change and thereby adapting to it. Moreover, this research/design/project tries to answer the following research question: “How can the value of the landscape of the Binnenveld be improved by adapting to climate change?” In order to answer this question, the concepts Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and natural climate buffers will be explored and used (Scherr, Shames and Friedman, 2012; Veraart et al, 2019). Climate Smart Agriculture is a way of managing agriculture to be prepared for the changing climate. Natural climate buffers are areas where natural processes are retrieving space, mostly aimed at water. Both concepts contribute to a more robust landscape if the variability and uncertainty in the weather is increasing.

Creating a lively public space through design for climate adaptation

Abstract: The Pope’s Square (Vitória, Brazil) is currently considered an unfavourable public space due to its full exposure to climate factors. The objective of this thesis is to improve the use of the square through climate adaptive design interventions. Map analysis and GIS-data provide an analysis of the current problems and opportunities for the site. A literature review identifies key concepts in climate adaptive design and user preference for urban public spaces. Design guidelines from literature are used to build up the final design for Pope’s Square in design software. This results in a lively public urban space that is time-resistant due to its adaptation to climate factors.

Designing the Landscape in-between Future Farmland
Designing different archetypes in circular agriculture, that contribute to spatial qualities of the landscape around Etten-Leur

Abstract: This BSC thesis addresses the redesign of the agricultural landscape of Etten-Leur keeping in mind the spatial qualities of the area. As conventional farming systems are negatively impacting the environment, a shift towards circular agriculture is necessary. The question for landscape architects arises; how to implements different forms of circular agriculture in the landscape, while taking care of the existing spatial qualities. The research area of this thesis is the landscape north of Etten-Leur. First, the current landscape is analyzed based on its landscape elements and spatial qualities. After this, different archetypes of circular agriculture, (nature based, technology land based and technology non-land based agriculture), are subdivided over the landscape using standards for allocation. Then a design for the landscape is made while using criteria for spatial quality. Design guidelines are set-up for the region of Etten-Leur regarding implementation of circular agriculture and spatial qualities.

Connecting nature and agriculture
The Binnenveld transition to nature-inclusive agriculture combined with public place

Abstract: The idea of extensifying agriculture to reduce livestock in the Netherlands, has been debated for years now, especially since the rise of the nitrogen crisis in the country. Not just the nitrogen-cycle, but also challenges concerning the climate, biodiversity, the quality of soil, water, air and the attractiveness of the landscape require a long-term solution. This thesis aims to help both agriculture and nature development in the Binnenveld to be successful, by investigating the transition path of nature-inclusive agriculture through design, with a second focus on public place. This second focus is needed in order to facilitate the nature-inclusive transition pathway and enrich the landscape. A design scenario will be developed in which nature and agriculture are connected by using coherent diversity in the design. This will be done in combination with public place to make the transition pathway possible in the Binnenveld.

Ecological values & Climate adaptation in the Binnenveld
Bachelor Thesis

Abstract: Heuvelrug and the Veluwe, is facing complex stressors. The area distinguishes itself from the high, sandy surroundings by the occurence of seepage and therefor could have a high ecological value and large adaptive and mitigative capacity to climate change. However, lower groundwater levels and pollution decrease those qualities (van den Broek and Beltman, 1994). This design-led research aims to strengthen the water quality and quantity in the system in order to create ideal circumstances for the settlement of wet target habitats. Those habitats play an important role in reducing the impact of human on climate change and vice versa. By applying two water based development pathways, one focussing on the Grift and one on the upstream water structure, and one vegetation/agriculture based approach, we can uncover potential side-benefits and synergies between water, nature, agriculture and adaptivity to climate change are discovered.

A (re)design for Hospital Gelderse Vallei Ede and its surroundings for countering age-related loneliness

Abstract: Ageing is often accompanied by physical and men al health problems. Loneliness is one of those big mental health problems among elderly people. Loneliness can lead to more severe health problems like depression, hopelessness and worsening motor functions and is even associated with higher mortality rates. As loneliness among elderly people is becoming a growing societal problem in the Netherlands, it is up to municipalities to counteract against it. For countering loneliness, social cohesion and social interaction are vital factors. As acting healthcare institution for approximately 260.000 residents of the provinces Gelderland and Utrecht, ‘Ziekenhuis Gelderse Vallei’ in Ede can take a leading role in countering loneliness among elderly people by providing social interaction locations (SIL) that are attractive, comfortable and reachable for elderly people. This would increase the social interaction possibilities for elderly people. To do so, a new spatial design of the public space surrounding the hospital facilities should be considered.

Abstract: The community center ‘De Veldkei’ in Havelte; a town in the province of Drenthe, is a social hub where activity and social gatherings take place. The building is having an architectural overhaul, but the outdoor space is staying behind. Since vitality in all dimensions (physical, mental, meaning and social) is becoming increasingly important, this design research will examine how the vitality of the citizens in Havelte can be improved with spatial interventions in the outdoor space of the community center.

Inclusive Amsterdam
Finding synergies between social activity and urban biodiversity in the quay wall district

Abstract: The city of Amsterdam is known for its historical quay wall district. However, due to the lack of conservation, the constructions of the quay walls are in poor condition. Results of the neglected conservation are noticable throughout the city center, such as in the recent collapse of the Grimburgwal. Another problem the city is facing is alienation in the community, due to the individualization and the use of the center as a theme park by tourists. The lack of social meeting spaces and green spaces in the center contribute to this trend. In order to create a healthy, resilient and social city center the open public spaces in the quay wall district need to be transformed. This research is focused on developing a method to discover and imply synergies between cultural/social activity and urban biodiversity in the open spaces of the quay wall district.

Een buurthuis door kinderen, voor iedereen
De Veldkei als actieve ontdekkingstocht

Abstract: Het buurthuis in Havelte heeft een nieuwe invulling voor de buitenruimte nodig. Zo is er nu sprake van vergrijzing in het dorp en beïnvloedt dit zo ook de gemiddelde leeftijd van de bezoekers aan De Veldkei. Het blijkt moeilijk te zijn om jongere generaties aan te trekken en in dit ontwerpend onderzoek wordt onderzocht welke ruimtelijke interventies geïmplementeerd kunnen worden in de buitenruimte van De Veldkei om zo ook jongere generaties naar het buurthuis te trekken. Het zoeken naar deze ruimtelijke interventies zal gedaan worden in samenwerking met kinderen van groep 8 van OBS De Bosrank om zo via kinderparticipatie in de vorm van een co-design met kinderen, direct vanuit de bron, een zo volledig mogelijk beeld te krijgen van waar de belangen van kinderen liggen voor de inrichting van de buitenruimte van het buurthuis. Daarnaast wordt gekeken of kinderen een verbindende rol hebben tussen generaties en in samenwerking met kinderen een ontwerp gevormd kan worden die ook aansluit bij andere generaties.

A multifunctional transition zone surrounding the Binnenveldse Hooilanden

Abstract: This thesis project focuses on the design of the surrounding agricultural fields of the Binnenveldse Hooilanden. There is an abrupt boundary between the Binnenveldse Hooilanden and its surrounding fields. This sharp border between nature area and intensive agriculture has negative effects for the nature development. Examples include nuisances in the form of eutrophication, acidification or desiccation. For the development of nature to succeed, this boundary will have to be softened with the integration of a created transition zone. In order to redesign the area successful, the current approach in agriculture also has to change. This thesis will also investigate which required changes should be made in agriculture. Nature inclusive agriculture will be used to investigate an agricultural concept in which opportunities for combining nature development with recreation are involved. The aim is to create a sustainable, multifunctional, and recreationally attractive agricultural area which will form a ring structure surrounding and as an expansion of the Binnenveldse Hooilanden.
