Humus forms

Humus Forms are studied by Alterra from the beginning of the nineties onwards. Alterra does so because it realized that a lot can be learned about the functioning of ecosystems through such study.

The knowledge acquired is now made available to others by means of a field guide with a description and classification of humus forms for ecological applications. This field guide is meant for a wide array of researchers, students, nature managers, ecologist and everybody who is interested. We hope that its users will improve their insight into the functioning of a specific ecosystem by studying its humus forms.

The field guide is available in both a digital and a printed form in Dutch and since 2007 also in English. However the presentation of this guide does not mean that our knowledge is completed. Research goes on because knowledge about humus profiles is as dynamic as the humus profile itself. Recent developments and insights are presented on this site.
