Education at the division of Toxicology

The education provided by the Toxicology section is directed towards Environmental Sciences, Nutritional Sciences, Food Safety and Food Technology students. In addition Biology and Molecular Sciences students often attend Toxicology courses.

Toxicology provides a number of lecture series and practical courses for BSc and MSc students. On a regular basis the section contributes to the Postgraduate Education in Toxicology (PET courses) and to national and international courses.

Our graduates found employment in a wide range of scientific, advisory and educational jobs, in academia, government, industry and the private sector.

MSc and BSc theses

Students can do a MSc or BSc thesis at the Division of Toxicology. We offer projects within five major research themes.

Risk assessment of herbal food supplements and teas

Within this research theme, we work on the following topics:

  • Alternative testing strategies to quantify the toxicity of pyrrolizidine alkoloid N-oxides
  • Risk assessment of aphrodisiac herbal products from Ghanaian market
  • A novel approach for the exposure and risk assessment of human systemic exposure to organophosphate pesticides via food in the Western and Chinese population

Mode of action of food-borne (natural) toxins

Within this research theme, we work on the following topics:

  • Absorption, metabolism and biological effects of furocoumarins and consequences for their risk assessment
  • The role of stability, repair and mutagenicity in the relative hazards and risks of DNA adducts formed by food-borne liver carcinogens of variable carcinogenic potential
  • Mode of action-based risk assessment of combined exposure to mycotoxins in maize and maize products
  • In vitro metabolism and genotoxicity of naked versus alkylated PAH that may be present in mineral oils

Alternatives to animal testing

Within this research theme, we work on the following topics:

  • Alternative testing strategies for characterising the development toxicity of different types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in petroleum substances
  • Role of the gut microbiota in the estrogenicity and related health effects of the isoflavones genistein and daidzein
  • The role of the gut microbiota in the toxicity and risk assessment of food-borne chemicals
  • The role of gut microbial and mammalian co-metabolism in the toxicity of (masked) zearalenone
  • Development of a novel, interdiciplinary model to study interactions between foodborne xenobiotics, the intestinal microbiome and the intestinal epithelium
  • Influence of intestinal microbial metabolism on the biological activity of flavonoids from herbel teas and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
  • The effects of food contaminants on gut microbiota and host plasma metabolomics and related health effects
