Plant Research International specialises in strategic and applied research. Thanks to the combination of knowledge and experience in genetics and reproduction, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, crop protection, crop ecology and agrosystems, we offer a unique range of perspectives for government and industry. We serve the entire agro-production chain with scientific products, from the DNA level to production system concepts. Plant Research International regularly has articles in the leading scientific journals and has a superb infrastructure. In this EU project the main department involved is the business unit Biodiversity and Plant Breeding. This unit develops and uses methods and technologies for the detection and characterisation of functional genetic diversity and the processes that control this diversity. Our scientists develop basic genetic understanding of crops and convert this knowledge into new strategies and technologies in plant breeding.
Main features are:
- instruments for detecting and quantifying genetic variation and efficiently deploying this in biodiversity and breeding research
- molecular markers and other improved identification and selection methods
- prototypes of genetically modified crops with new characteristics, breeding material and varieties.
AAS - Agricultural Academy of Sciences, Research Institute of Agrobiology, Pyongyang, DPRK
The Research Institute of Agrobiology (RIA) has been constructed in 1988 under the Academy of Agricultural Sciences (AAS) which is the biggest organization for agricultural research and extension services, in Pyongyang, DPR Korea. Its mission is to develop and foster an ambitious research field for basic and applied agro-biological sciences and for training high quality graduate students to meet the self-sufficient food demand in DPR Korea. It is confronted with increasing demands for agricultural products that are limited by the decline of arable land, and the shortage of agricultural inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides.RIA’s research activities span across 3 major research fields, namely Molecular Breeding, Plant Growth & Development and Metabolism Regulation, and Utilization of Natural Resources for Agriculture.
RIA is envisioned as the national center for research and development in the field of agro-biological and agricultural biotechnology, aiming to be a world-class institute for Agro-biological Sciences in close cooperation with international partners.
The goal of RIA is to resolve the critical problems limiting local agricultural production, to contribute answers of cutting-edge agricultural scientific questions and to promote the competence of our research groups in innovative R&D.
