Title: Evaluating pest models using GFS data in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
Abstract: Insect pests in developing countries are responsible for considerable yield losses. Correct timing of pesticide application is therefore essential. A simple degree day type of model suffices for this purpose. However, the required good quality meteorological data is often lacking. In this study, we will focus on the Mediterranean fruit fly in the valleys of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. We will explore the suitability of GFS downscaled reanalysis data for this particular application. To validate our approach, we have data from a few meteorological stations in the region and local insect counts. This study can serve as a benchmark to start a pest forecast system.
