Ready to eat or longer shelf life? Focussing on quality enables targeting of fresh produce to specific customer needs. This leads to more-sustainable chains, more satisfied consumers and considerable cost savings. Wageningen Food & Biobased Research gives companies the knowledge, insights and resources to make the right logistics choices.
Making production chains more sustainable
What is the first step in making a production chain more sustainable? How can quality be turned into a key performance indicator (KPI)? And how can a batch of ready-to-eat strawberries quickly get to a high stock-turnover supermarket? Wageningen Food & Biobased Research provides instruments and advice for managing quality in the chain. Our solutions reduce supply-chain failures and help to get a better price for products that are not wanted in one location but are in another: examples are apples with skin blemishes or (over)ripe tomatoes.
Wageningen's experts have a deep, broad understanding of measuring product quality, transport and storage, and do have unique expertise in the field of quality-driven logistics. We know better than anyone where interventions in the chain will be most beneficial. We use advanced in-house models to make detailed calculations showing financial -, quality - and sustainability gains that derive from such interventions for supply chain actors.
Decision models and simulations
The AgroLogistics Analysis and Design INstrument (ALADIN) consists of advanced models for measuring, simulating and predicting quality loss in fresh products, food waste amounts and logistic activities (stocking and delivering), to name but a few. This method and tool enable parties in the chain to gain insight into the effects of quality-focused operations, and have already been used in projects such as GreenCHAINge (top sector) and REFRESH (EU).
