Guaranteeing food security requires a smart (re)design of production chains. Wageningen Food & Biobased Research supports companies, governments and civil organisations in making strategic decisions.
How can residents of a growing city be sure of sufficient healthy, nutrional and fresh food in the future? Is a cold chain necessary for the transport of fresh produce? What steps are needed to achieve a sustainable or circular production chain? Wageningen Food & Biobased Research provides insight into the what and where of production: what areas have shortages or surpluses of, for example, rice, fresh vegetables or dairy products. Our experts advise governments and companies - urban or rural - on developing infrastructures for static or flexible food-supply chains.
Supply chain analysis
Wageningen experts have a great deal of knowledge about quality, post-harvest technology and agrologistics and have a significant international network in the field. Our experts systematically map out the movement of products from one location to another, in what volumes and the stakeholders involved. They also determine key performance indicators, such as product quality and carbon footprint, and advise on the (re)design of production chains.
(Re)designing production chains
An understanding of which of this country’s agricultural products are suitable for the international market is the result of a study by Wageningen Food & Biobased Research for the Mexican government. Our experts assessed the quality and extent of product flows and examined how existing production chains were organised. They also gave advice on the (re)design of these chains. In another project, for the North-Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, our experts are working on improving storage conditions for fresh fruit intended for consumers in mega-cities such as Mumbai and Delhi.
