Veterinary Medicines

According to EU regulations our food may not contain the remnants of veterinary medicines. These regulations are rigorously enforced. Wageningen Food Safety Research is a National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for residues of veterinary medicines.

Wageningen Food Safety Research is a NRL for animal drugs which promote animal health, such as:

  • antibiotics
  • anthelmintics
  • coccidiostatics
  • substances like acetylsalicylic acid and ibuprofen (also referred to as NSAIDs).

Non-registered antibiotics

Wageningen Food Safety Research is also a NRL for non-registered antibiotics such as nitrofuranes, malachite green and chlooramfenicol. Products like meat, milk and eggs are all tested for the presence of animal drugs.

A full overview of these substances (and substance groups) can be found in Regulation (EU) 2017/625.

Regular proficiency tests
