Food System in 10 Years challenge

In ten years time, what has changed in the way we grow, produce, process, transport, prepare, and consume our food? And what has changed in the way these activities impact our society, incomes, environment and climate following the COVID-19 pandemic that hit us in 2020.

Worldwide, people are affected in the way they have access to food, the way they consume food or the way they perceive the impact of their behaviour on the economy, environment and society. Vulnerabilities and dilemmas that are already present are exposed and aggravated by COVID-19.

For instance: Cheap food improves access for the poor, but does it provide enough incentives for sustainable farming? And are we sufficiently aware of how we rely on international trade to provide our daily food?. Or: a pandemic like COVID-19 can affect a certain age group or part of the population, which will put pressure on food production or consumption. To what extent could our future food system cope with these challenges? And who should be involved in implementing and supporting the changes we need?

Therefore we call upon your creativity, as a student of Wageningen University & Research, to think about the necessary changes AND about a way to visualize these changes in the food system to convince other people to support.

The challenge

Imagine, in ten years time, you have a virtual or physical exhibition space available. How would you visualise and illustrate the changes in the food system over the past ten years since 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic?

The Challenge

We challenge you to contribute to the necessary change by visualizing the future now. Join with a group of 4 to 6 persons, or participate individually to be hooked up with others in designing and visualising  changes in our food system. Expert support will be arranged for: Wageningen University and Research experts will support and reflect your thinking on food system change. Experts in visualization and communication will support you in tapping into creativity and presentation skills. You’ll meet and present to great minds on 16 October during the celebrations of World Food Day and exhibit your visualization in the World Food Center in Ede early December 2020.

Registration is open until 17 September. We invite Bachelor as well as Master students from Wageningen University & Research to participate as a team of 4-6 persons, or register as an individual. From the individual registrations, teams will be formed.

Timeline

Phase 1

  • 9 September, 16.00 hrs. Online Info Event, meet the experts and Q&A
  • Prepare your concept of the needed changes and initial visualisation
  • Present and pitch your concept in a two minute pitch on Youth World Food Day (16 October) and on one page A3. Participate at the Youth World Food Day celebration event. This includes workshops on food systems, visualization and creative thinking
  • 6 - 8 Selected teams will continue to the next phase to prepare their concept in detail
  • Senior Wageningen University and Research experts will be available for support and discussion
  • Preparation time estimation: 8 – 12 hours per participant

Phase 2

  • Specify and prepare visualisation of your concept
  • Support from visualisation and communication experts will be available. Wageningen University & Research experts will be available for food system knowledge
  • Display your (multimedia) visualisation in the Stinger Dome of the World Food Center in Ede. Present your concept and visualization during a high level event at the World Food Center early December
  • Award ceremony. A jury will award the most compelling design
  • Preparation time estimation: 3 days per participant
