Thesis track: Mathematical and Statistical Methods– Biosystems Engineering

Thesis track: Mathematical and Statistical Methods – MSc Biosystems Engineering

The thesis track MAT focusses on development of models to get a better understanding of the world around us. One could think of smart ventilation for food storage. How can we model Greenhouses, so that we can make optimal design choices.

The question arises; how can we quantify all the aspects of a system and deduce a strong informative model out of it, that can be applied in real applications. Topics of research are in biosystems modelling, systems biology, pattern recognition, data mining, machine learning and big data.

Following are some relevant courses associated with the Farm Technology group.

Course Handbook: Physical Modelling

Physical Modelling

Nowadays computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques become more and more integrated into the design of technical bio systems. In addition to this, CFD is also used in the analyses of complex environmental problems. The result of this is that an increasing amount of life science applications of CFD appears in literature with a focus on flow visualization, calculation of heat losses and concentration profiles.

Systems and Control Theory

Systems and Control Theory

People want to be in control.  In Wageningen we want to control systems such as batch bioreactors , robotic systems or climate control systems. This course teaches you how to optimally control these systems based on a mathematical model of the system. Since the model is hardly ever a perfect description of reality, measurements will be used to improve the information concerning the state of the system.
