FAQ

Can I combine a course with a master thesis?

In general, we discourage students to take courses while working on the thesis: we learnt that the workload of combining courses and a thesis usually lead to delay in completion. In case you want to take a course next to your thesis voluntarily, please decide for yourself whether this is worthwhile, or e.g. a form of procrastination.

Project extension by design, as a consequence of taking a required course next to the thesis, is not a problem per se. We advise to consult your supervisor on how to account for the time that is needed to be able to complete the course. As a rule of thumb, 6 extra ECTS lead to an extension of the thesis trajectory of 1 month.

Can I enter the master thesis in case I have not passed a required course from the prerequisites?

It is possible to enter the master thesis without having passed a required course, provided that you have followed the full course and are thus familiar with the study materials of the respective course. Then, during your thesis, you may enrol for the resit. Note that students can only graduate if they have passed (all) the prerequisite courses of the master thesis!
