Student Challenges

Student competitions provide a great opportunity to work on real-life problems and make a difference. You put theory into practice and build your CV and network. Challenges boost innovation and contribute to a more sustainable future. They also offer learning and personal development opportunities outside of the regular curriculum. Therefore Wageningen University & Research organizes Challenges for students worldwide and supports WUR teams that participate in Challenges.

We set out to educate and inspire young people to become the changemakers for a sustainable and resilient future.

WUR Urban Greenhouse Challenge #2

The second edition of the WUR Urban Greenhouse Challenge took 53 multi-disciplinary teams from 79 universities in 29 countries on an epic journey, on which they were challenged to design the ultimate urban greenhouse for Dongguan, China.

The teams were asked to bring professional food production (back) into urban neighborhoods, integrating social, economic, environmental and technical aspects into one coherent and innovative concept. During the intensive ten months, they have received support of international experts, participated in various on-line events and worked hard on their design while withstanding the Covid-19 epidemic. After two selection rounds ten international teams have made it to the Grand Finale that took place on 27 August 2020 on-line and at Wageningen Campus.

Thanks to our participation in this Challenge we believe we can make a difference. We look forward to the future with optimism.

WUR Rethink Protein Challenge

In the second edition of the ReThink Protein Challenge, we challenge students to come up with a business idea or prototype that helps provide 9 billion people with enough protein in a way that is healthy, affordable and good for our planet.

From January until June 2021 they will develop, with support of top experts, a business idea or prototype that offers an innovative and sustainable approach to meeting protein needs and targets a specific market.

We are still overwhelmed how much it changed our lives in such a short time. The chances offered to students all around the world through the competition are unique and truly amazing.
