Quarantine services

Students arriving in the Netherlands from certain countries and regions are strongly advised or required to self-quarantine for 10 days. Even if you do not have any symptoms or if you have tested negative for COVID-19. Once in the Netherlands, you can self-quarantine at home or in temporary or holiday accommodation. On this webpage you’ll find more information about self-quarantine.

Testing for Corona

Students and employees of participating institutions in vocational education, higher professional education and universities can apply for their free self-tests here.

As of 1 June 2020, anyone with symptoms that could indicate the novel coronavirus can be tested. This is necessary so the measures can be relaxed, while still preventing the spread of COVID-19 in the Netherlands. 

Call 0800-1202 for an appointment to be tested. If you are calling from a foreign phone, you can call +31 85 065 9063. This number is available from 8AM till 8PM. Corona testing is free of charge.

Call the General practioner if you are very short of breath or have a high fever, or if you are concerned.

Call 112 in a life-threatening situation.

Should I go in self-quarantine?

From 1 June 2021 you must quarantine if you travel/return to the Netherlands after staying in certain countries. This requirement also applies even if you have been vaccinated. More information about self-quarantine can be found here.

Students from very high risk countries are required to self-quarantine upon arrival in the Netherlands. On this website you can find the list of countries and areas that are considered very high risk.

To check whether people comply with the quarantine obligation, a call team has been set up, led by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, which calls people on a random basis. If, based on background noise, the call team suspects that you are not at the quarantine address, a report can be sent to the municipality. Non-compliance with the quarantine obligation can be punished by the mayor with an administrative fine of € 339,-

Countries and regions that are not mentioned on the list of safe countries or on the list of very high risk, these regions are considered high-risk areas. Students from high-risk areas we strongly advise to go in self-quarantine upon arrival. This is to prevent the possible spread of the virus. Can I shorten the quarantine period?

You must self-quarantine for 10 days if you travelling to the Netherlands after staying in an area where the risk of coronavirus infection is very high. This quarantine requirement applies even if you have proof of vaccination or proof of recovery. If you get tested on day 5 you might be able to shorten the quarantine period.

What does self-quarantine mean?

  • Stay at the place where you are in quarantine. Do not receive visitors.
  • During the self-quarantine period do not travel or go to another location in the Netherlands.
  • If you do not develop any symptoms that could be caused by coronavirus, you can end the self-quarantine after 10 days.

The following rules apply during self-quarantine:

  • Do not use public transport.
  • Nobody may visit you, except for medical purposes (for example, a doctor or a GGD official).
  • If you need medical assistance do not go to your doctor or the hospital, but phone the doctor instead.

Quarantine Buddy

To make your arrival and stay comfortable we have a buddy for you, who can give you advice about living in Wageningen (how to take the bus/train from the airport to Wageningen, etc.), and your buddy can also help you doing groceries if you need to quarantine after arrival in The Netherlands.

Vaccination

  • Will international students also be vaccinated in the Netherlands?

We advise you to get vaccinated in your home country. It is possible to get vaccinated in the Netherlands. The university is in the process of having the Public Health Service (GGD) come to the campus for student vaccination at the end of August. You will be informed as soon as there is more information. It is important that you register with the municipality upon arrival. Registration at the municipality can be done here. For information about vaccination, check this website.

  • When is it my turn to get the vaccine?

See previous question. It is hard to say when you can get vaccinated because the vaccination schedule can change. At the website from government you can find more information.

  • Would it be better to get vaccinated in my home country?

It is not sure yet when (international) students can get vaccinated in the Netherlands, therefore it might be better to get vaccinated in your home country if that is possible. It is important to bring a vaccination certificate from your home country. Keep in mind that you need to arrive in The Netherlands on time to get practical things done and for when university starts.

    • Is it possible to get my second vaccination in the Netherlands?

    I received a first vaccination abroad and have yet to get a second shot for full vaccination. How can I make an appointment for this? You can get a second vaccination in the Netherlands. For this you need to fill in a web form. You will then receive an invitation for the 2nd vaccine.

    • My first vaccine is not mentioned on the list, what will be my second vaccine?

    You have received a first vaccination abroad and need a second jab. Or you have received a first vaccination from a healthcare provider who cannot give you a second jab. Fill in this application form, after sending this form you will receive a confirmation.

    Medical services

    General Practitioner

    In The Netherlands your General Practitioner (huisarts) should always be your initial contact for all medical matters. The General Practitioner (GP) is key in the world of health care, treating patients for basic non-surgical problems and providing consultations for most of your general health questions. The GP also serves as your link to most other services such as hospitalisation, specialists, midwifery, physiotherapy, etc. If necessary, the GP can refer you to a medical specialist at short notice. The GP keeps your medical record up to date and prescribes your medication.

    How to find a GP?

    You should register with a GP upon arrival in The Netherlands. You can choose your GP yourself. When choosing a GP, make sure you feel comfortable with them, as changing a GP once registered is discouraged and rarely done. Some GP’s may not accept any new patients as they are already filled to capacity. To find a local GP you can search on this website. The Student Medical Center Wageningen (not part of Wageningen University) accepts new patients and are experienced in typical student related problems. You can register here.

    Visiting your GP

    In case of illness as well as for general consultations on less urgent matters, first phone your GP. A trained medical assistant will answer your call and note your complaints in order to properly schedule your appointment.

    Only for emergency

    The emergency number 112 is for when you need urgent help, for instance when your life is in immediate danger, or if someone is seriously injured and needs prompt medical attention.
