New biotechnological processes can be used to produce chemicals, polymers and fuels based on renewable raw materials. For these processes Wageningen Food & Biobased Research optimises various types of micro-organisms (bacteria, algae, yeasts and fungi) and enzymes using metabolic engineering and enzyme technologies.

Product development

Over the past decade, we have developed a number of innovative and sustainable biotechnological processes for the production of biobased chemicals and polymers in cooperation with industrial  partners. Optimisation of micro-organisms and specific enzymes is part of  the Research and Development effort . Examples of developed products include biopolyesters (PHAs), glycosaminoglycans (heparosan, hyaluronic acid) and various organic acids that can be used as monomers in the polymer industry. We also develop bio-hydrogen, butanol and custom designed protein polymers. Our work is based on an integral approach, and focused on efficiency, sustainability, upscaling and the desired end product.

Our methods

Wageningen Food & Biobased Research works with various clients from a range of industries. In the development of new biotechnological processes we focus on the desired end product, including specific client specifications, such as sustainability, cost, performance and  protection of  developed knowledge via patents. Micro-organisms and enzymes are modified in such a way that they are efficient and robust, as well as being applicable in specific industrial bioprocesses. We have extensive experience in  metabolic modification of a wide variety of micro-organisms including fungi, yeasts, bacteria and algae. Wageningen Food & Biobased Research develops and further optimises methods for newly selected micro-organisms in a relatively short time. This approach offers  our partners exclusive opportunities for patenting the research results.
